How do I become a dancer/ dance teacher?

December 19th, 2011

I am 18 years old and only started dancing two years ago. I have only done jazz and modern (never ballet). I would really love to have a career in dance. Can anyone suggest anything I can do or have I left it too late in life. Should I just give up?

As much information as possible please. Thank youu :-)

ur too young to give up so dont u still have like 30 yrs to try left. i suggest you go to a specialty school or you can look into any dance places that are closest to you and apply to teach there. you should find a place in the phonebook

My teacher told me ballet is the foundation of dance, so it’s kinda hard to teach dance if you never taken ballet. Plus dance is a real competitive business, and I think it you work hard at it then you can defiantly do it.

First and formost, you need to take more classes if your planning on being a teacher. I would suggest taking some dance classes in college. If you aren’t planning on attending college, at least take as many classes as you can at a local studio. Your going to want to be taking ballet, contemporary, jazz, modern, lyrical and maybe even a tap class. Most dance teachers are quite broad with what types of dance they know. For example, I teach beginners-advanced classes ages 3-adult. I teach all levels of tap, ballet, jazz, modern, pointe, lyrical, and some hip hop. It’s important to have a broad range of styles that you know and can teach. This will make you more desirable to a studio. If you can only teach 1 or 2 types, the studio will hire someone who can do more. So my advice is to start with taking more classes for a few years before even thinking about teaching. Don’t give up though. Teaching could still be in your future. You’re young and you have plenty of time. Good luck!
