How to stand out as a dancer?
August 26th, 2010
I love dance and i’m taking it as an A-Level. We’re going to do loads of performaces and stuff as a big group, but i really want to stand out and get noticed. Normally in big performances theres just a few that stand out and everybody watches, but i dont really know why? I’m an alright dancer but i want to be a great dancer. Does anyone have any tips to draw an audience to you? Thanks

You lead with grace and dignity.
there is one difference to being a good dancer and a great dancer. a good dancer can do all the movements really well but a great dancer can express the emotion within each move. you want your face to fill up with emotion and instead of just doing the movements, do them naturally as walking. make yourself feel all the emotions coming from the music and the story line. (if you have one) you also need to make sure that you dance as perfectly as possible. make sure that you are executing all your moves correctly with grace and the look of effortlessness.
hope i helped!
To stand out, you need to make everything big and put all of your energy into it. Do every move clearly so the audience knows exactly what you’re doing. Do that and you’re all set ! =)
Make ALL of your moves exaggerated and BIG!!!!
Show your personality!
Happy Dancing!
Be very clean and solid in your movements.
For example, I would rather watch a small, but perfect in positioning leap; rather than a very high, sloppy one. Use your control, and push everything you do– without getting off count or out of place.
Also, facial expressions are important. SMILE, SMILE, SMILE.
If you look confident in what you are doing, the audience will want to watch you all the way through.
Always smiles and make eye contact with various members of your audience!
And most importantly, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE ! The way to stand out is to be BETTER than everyone else !
And also, MAKE YOURSELF SPARKLY !!! Put sparkles in your hair and on your skin if you want ! People are like puppies, they’re attracted to pretty shiny things !
Having stage presence is also known as the “It Factor,” because it can only be defined as “I know it when I see it.” There really isn’t a way to tell you what to do and it’s essentially unteachable. It’s the key factor that directors and judges look for in auditions because everything else can be taught. It can cause confusion with casting decisions and audition results because you may feel that your technique was better – and it may well be – but the others get selected because they are more watchable.
A key component of stage presence for a dancer is musicality: you need to understand the music and translate it to the audience through your movements and expressions. Therefore, you only smile when the music tells you to smile. You also follow your choreographer’s instructions and do the moves the way he or she told you to do them. DON’T make eye contact with the audience unless that’s what the choreographer wants you to do! Be the character the music wants you to be, not a beauty pageant contestant.
Think of dancing the same way you would acting. You don’t tell an actor to be clean and solid with their lines. The lines of a script are meant to flow naturally, one into the other. Don’t think of movement as distinct moves taking you from A to B to C; think of them as ABC. Sometimes lines are whispered and sometimes they are shouted. You need to draw the audience into YOUR reality, not look at them and imply, “Hi, look at me up here on the stage!” If you focus too much on doing your moves and what comes next, rather than simply performing the dance, your audience will pick up on your effort and cannot be transported to another reality. You need to make it look easy and natural.
