One of the first gems of the cable TV age, Faerie Tale Theatre brings 26 classic tales to life. Produced over a five-year span (1982-87) for Showtime, FTT brought together creative dramatics and whimsical writing with some of the top talents of the day. Executive producer/host Shelley Duvall (who was coming off her breakout role in The Shining) shepherds this mix of theatrical simplicity and grand storytelling for these oft-told tales (“Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “Sleeping Beauty,” and the like) for kids and their parents. Since they are not elaborately produced, FTT may be a hard sell for some smaller members of the family at first, but most should be hooked, even older kids who may pooh-pooh fairy tales. There’s always a slight twist that makes these productions fresh.

The cast is amazing, especially when you think how lightly cable television was thought of in the ’80s: Jeff Bridges, Bud Cort, Liza Minnelli, James Coburn, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Reeve, Klaus Kinski, Billy Crystal, Matthew Broderick, Gregory Hines, Eric Idle, Robin Williams, and Mick Jagger are some of the talented–and varied–actors appearing. Crystal’s take on the smart “Little Pig” (with Jeff Goldblum as the wolf) and Williams’s “Frog Prince” are two comic gems. Malcolm McDowell, right in the middle of his career high-point of playing baddies, brings flair to the Big Bad Wolf, while his then-real-life wife Mary Steenburgen beautifully counterpoints as Red Riding Hood. The casting of Vincent Price and Vanessa Redgrave in “Snow White” is inspired. Also impressive are the directors Duvall pooled: Tim Burton (“Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp”), Francis Ford Coppola (“Rip Van Winkle”) Peter Medak (three episodes), Nicholas Meyer (“Pied Piper”), and Roger Vadim (“Beauty and the Beast”). You can go on for days about these wonderful tales, most totaling around the 45-minute mark, but it’s better just to get the set and start wherever you’d like; you will get to the end sooner than you think. –Doug Thomas

Campion – The Complete Second Season

July 27th, 2010

Product Description
Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 10/25/2005 Run time: 440 minutes Rating: NrAmazon.com
For the second season, the creators of the British mystery series Campion have cranked up the adventure and derring-do. The deceptively bookish 1930s sleuth Albert Campion (Peter Davison, also a former Doctor Who) and his formerly thuggish manservant Lugg (Brian Glover) dive into four two-part stories that start modestly and cleverly escalate to high suspense. In Sweet Danger, Campion must prove that a cheerful trio of siblings are the heirs to a tiny Balkan kingdom that’s suddenly become politically significant; along the way are a mysterious millionaire and hints of witchcraft. Dancers in Mourning starts with petty vandalism at a musical comedy revue but builds to an awful bombing–even Campion, who normally views murder with relish, is disturbed. Flowers for the Judge is the least exotic of the lot–the entire story takes place in London as Campion investigates a murder in a publishing firm–but the tightly wound plot is possibly the best of the season. The final piece, Mystery Mile, features a hedge maze, a disappearing judge, quicksand, conjuring tricks gone awry, a rooftop rescue, and a nefarious criminal mastermind. Even better, these juicy set-ups are carried out with delightful skill; the writers and directors have tightened everything up, with utterly seductive results. Even when the conclusion feels a little lacking, getting there is great fun. The only complaint might be a shortage of the ever enjoyable Lugg, who plays too small of a role in a couple of the shows. –Bret Fetzer

Exes and Ohs – The Complete First Season

January 16th, 2010

Description
Meet Jennifer, a documentary filmmaker with a vivid fantasy life and a floundering career. Jennifer wants to find Ms. Right… but first she must navigate the rules of lesbian life, most of which she learns the hard way. Fortunately, her friends are there to help: Sam, a sexy commitment phobe who flips women faster than real estate; Chris and Kris, a lesbian couple expanding both their pet accessory business and their family; and Crutch, a young musician who wants to be taken seriously but still has some growing up to do. Surviving singlehood, couplehood – and each other – has never looked quite like this.Amazon.com
Six half-hour episodes of Exes and Ohs fly right by in this clever show’s first season. Directed by Lee Friedlander, Exes and Ohs humor is a careful blend of satire and sincerity, as mini-dramas in each saga mock elucidate the do’s and don’ts of lesbian social and romantic codes. Each of the characters, based on clichéd “lesbian types,” explode the clichés as the characters become rounder. The episodes are “hosted” by documentary filmmaker, Jennifer (Michelle Paradise), who periodically breaks out of character to describe the “rules” of lesbianism, as she learns them. Her best friend and former lover, Sam (Marnie Alton), is a free-spirited, sexy bombshell that provides a foil to Jennifer’s tendencies to over-think creative work and relationships. The main story concerns Jennifer’s traumatic breakup with Sienna (Darby Stanchfield), and Sam’s efforts to get Jennifer dating again. Their network of friends, always gathering at the Beever Café, include Kris (Angela Featherstone) and Chris (Megan Cavanaugh), women in matching outfits who run a pet supply and adoption company who yearn for real motherhood, and Crutch (Heather Matarazzo), the budding Ani DiFranco wannabe.

Subtle teasing happens to show these womens’ acute awareness of the clichés surrounding them. To start, in “There Must Be Rules,” Sienna has left Jennifer for their couple’s therapist. Instead of chiding Sienna for this, Jennifer claims she is destined to become the new couples’ best friend, because lesbian exes are above anger and jealousy. In “Cutthroat,” Jennifer and Sam feud over a hot billiards player at the local bar, while Crutch gets a new guitar and writes Indigo Girls rip-off tunes to everyone’s chagrin. In “Pole Dancing and Other Forms of Therapy,” Jennifer discovers therapeutic stress relief in a pole-dancing self-help workshop. Later episodes tackle deeper issues, so that by “What Goes Around,” Sam and Jennifer grapple with commitment avoidance, Kris and Chris consider how to get pregnant, and Crutch graduates to role-model status in her community. Since some scenes get overly psychological and borderline corny, it is refreshing to have Sam constantly reminding her lady friends that sometimes women need to stop with the sensitive analysis to “just get laid.” Maybe the second season will have more spicy romance.–Trinie Dalton
