what courses do i need to take to become a dancer?
August 26th, 2010
I’m a freshman in highschool, and I want to be a dancer, but I’m not sure what courses to take. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
I took ballet for 3 years, and I’m on the dance team at school.

Brass pole 101 and thongology. I think clear heels 101 is a prerequisite though.
What KIND of dancer.. Tap, Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Hip Hop, Contemporary POLE DANCING IN A STRIPPER BAR?, WHAT KIND OF DANCER? In case you don’t know it.. THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT.
Unless you are looking to be a professional hip hop or street style dancer you are kind of late if you have no training. Ballet is the basis of almost all dance. Most dancers who go pro by your age are taking 20-30 hours of class a week. If they are looking for a ballet career it is all ballet. If they are looking for a career as a contemporary dancer, it is still mostly ballet with one modern/contemporary class per day 5-6 days a week. Ballet dancers would start apprenticing with a company at age 16 or 17. Contemporary dancers would go on to conservatory/university programs to further study like NYU Tisch or Juilliard. Contemporary companies don’t usually hire under 20. If it is musical theater dance then also university programs like NYU Tisch CAP 21.
You need to take dance in high school not academics to become a dancer.
